Reproduction of the Peryton at the fountain at Linlithgow Palace, Scotland.

.

The statue of a green winged deer. Although the winged deer statue in the fountain may simply represent a heraldic beast, it is interesting to note that algae growth has turned it green: the same color as the perytons, is this just a coincidence?

.

Today this Scottish palace is largely in ruins inside, but the fountain still survives and dates back to the reign of King James (1512-1542).

.

These creatures, like gargoyles and green men, have no recorded myths of their own, other than their appearances in medieval art, Gothic art, Renaissance art, and British heraldry.

The peryton is said to be a legendary half-bird, half-deer animal that comes from Atlantis and feeds on human beings. It travels in hordes and does not cast its own shadow, but human-shaped shadows that it uses to capture and feed on humans.

.

They are said to be spirits of dead and lost people or reflections of Gods.

According to legend and revelations from oracles, the perytons were responsible for the fall of Rome.

This creature was first mentioned by Jorge Luis Borges in 1957, in his work The Book of Imaginary Beings, where he claims to have obtained the description from a now lost medieval manuscript.

.

The peryton has been included in modern role-playing game bestiaries such as Dungeons and Dragons, which has played a large part in its popularity.
