Reproduction of the Stryges Chimera of Notre-Dame de Paris in France.
.
The stryges, or striges (from the Greek orpiy/
strígx, "night bird"), are demons
winged females, half-women, half-birds, who
are screaming.
.
They appear from Antiquity in Roman belief (the first texts on the subject were in fact written in Latin and seem to refer to an ancient popular belief).
.
The chimeras of Notre-Dame de Paris are
statues representing chimeras which
adorn Notre-Dame Cathedral,
Paris. These are additions, these elements did not exist in the Middle Ages.
